Off-road world has lost one of its true pioneers. John Penton, often described as “a pioneering force in off-road motorcycling”, passed away peacefully on September 7, 2025, at the age of 100. Penton had only just celebrated his milestone birthday less than a month ago.
A Life That Shaped Off-Road Riding
John Penton’s story is inseparable from the roots of modern off-road sport. Competing in the ISDT (later ISDE) during a time when international travel was a far greater challenge than today, Penton became known for his grit, determination, and vision long before off-road motorcycles had the technology we take for granted now.
But his impact reached far beyond racing. Partnering with KTM, Penton introduced lighter, more agile off-road bikes to the American market. These bikes, branded as Penton Motorcycles, became legendary machines and remain highly sought-after classics today.
Innovator in Gear and Equipment
John Penton wasn’t just a racer or promoter. He also left a huge mark on rider equipment. Working with Alpinestars, he helped develop specialized off-road boots that were later sold under his Hi-Point brand. His Hi-Point clothing, accessories, and parts quickly became staples for riders across the United States, further cementing his role as both a competitor and an innovator.
